The Magic Redraw Button: When They Don’t Like Who Won, They Just… Draw Again
Imagine if lottery tickets worked like Instagram giveaways.
The Powerball numbers are drawn. Someone in Ohio wins $400 million. But then the lottery commission goes: “Hmm, we don’t really like that this person won. Let’s just… draw different numbers.”
There would be riots. Federal investigations. Congressional hearings.
But on social media? That’s just Tuesday.
The Redraw Scam (It’s More Common Than You Think)
Here’s how it plays out:
Business: “Okay, let’s use this random picker tool to select a winner!”
Tool: “Winner is @bob_smith_47293!”
Business: “Hmm, Bob has 14 followers and his profile pic is a default avatar. That’s bad optics.”
Business: *clicks refresh*
Tool: “Winner is @fitness_influencer_10k!”
Business: “PERFECT! That’s way better for engagement!”
Bob never knows he won. The fitness influencer gets the prize. Everyone sees a “legitimate” winner with a real profile. The giveaway looks more credible.
Except it was completely rigged.
Real Reasons Businesses Redraw (Yes, Really)
We’ve heard all of these as actual justifications:
- “The winner’s account looked fake” - Translation: They didn’t have enough followers to make us look good
- “They didn’t respond to our DM within 24 hours” - Translation: We sent the DM at 2am and picked someone else by 2pm
- “We wanted someone more aligned with our brand” - Translation: We wanted someone who would post about it with good photos
- “The original winner didn’t meet the requirements” - Translation: We added requirements after the draw to disqualify them
- “We’re redrawing for fairness” - Translation: We’re redrawing because the first draw wasn’t what we wanted
None of these are legitimate reasons to redraw. But since there’s no permanent record of the original draw, who’s going to stop them?
The “Terms & Conditions” Loophole
Oh, this is a good one. Businesses will put absolute nonsense in their giveaway terms:
“We reserve the right to redraw if the winner does not meet our community standards, brand alignment criteria, or other factors at our sole discretion.”
Translation: “We can pick whoever we want and just call it a redraw.”
This is like if your boss said: “Your salary is $80,000 per year, but I reserve the right to pay you less if I don’t like your vibes.”
That’s not how contracts work. That’s not how anything works.
Story Time: The Laptop That Got Redrawn 4 Times
A tech YouTuber ran a giveaway for a $2,000 gaming laptop. 50,000 entries. Big deal.
They livestreamed the draw. First winner? A lurker account with no comments. Chat went nuts saying it was fake.
So they redrew. Live.
Second winner? Someone who literally commented “I never win anything.” Chat said that was too perfect, must be scripted.
They redrew AGAIN.
Third winner? An account that turned out to be banned from the platform (they didn’t check before announcing).
Fourth draw. FOURTH. DRAW.
Finally picked someone acceptable to the mob. Gave them the laptop. Everyone happy.
Except for the first three people who actually won and got their wins stolen by public opinion and the magic redraw button.
Why The Blockchain Doesn’t Let You Do This
Our AIVA Prize Draw system runs on blockchain, which means the draw result is permanent and unchangeable.
Here’s what happens:
- The draw happens on-chain using Chainlink VRF
- A winner is selected
- That result is permanently recorded on the blockchain
- You cannot change it, delete it, or redraw it
If you don’t like who won? Too bad. The blockchain doesn’t care about your feelings. It doesn’t care that Bob has 14 followers. It doesn’t care that the winner’s profile picture is a photo of a cat.
The math selected a winner. That’s the winner. End of story.
“But What If The Winner Is Actually Fake?”
Great question. Here’s how you handle it the RIGHT way:
Before the draw: Set clear, specific eligibility requirements. Account must be X days old. Must have Y followers. Must have completed Z action. Whatever.
During entry validation: Only let eligible entries into the draw in the first place.
After the draw: If the winner doesn’t respond or can’t be verified, that’s documented on-chain, and a new eligible entry is selected using the same verifiable process.
You don’t get to redraw because you don’t like the aesthetic of the winner. You can only select an alternate if the winner is literally unreachable or violated clearly stated rules.
And that process is also recorded on-chain. Publicly. Forever.
What This Means for Your Business
Running a traditional giveaway means you can cheat. Which means people assume you ARE cheating.
Running a blockchain-verified giveaway means you CAN’T cheat. Which means people can actually trust you.
No more:
- “Let’s just pick someone else”
- “Refresh until we get a better winner”
- “That person doesn’t fit our brand, redraw”
- “The winner didn’t post about it so we’re picking someone else”
Just one draw. One permanent, verifiable result. One winner who actually won fair and square.
You know, like how prize draws are supposed to work.
The magic redraw button doesn’t exist on the blockchain. And that’s exactly the point.
